The main information about the modern state of fuel-containing materials (FCM) in the "Shelter" object and about the processes of changing their properties under the influence of external factors and internal self-irradiation is given. The degradation of lava-like fuel-containing materials (LFCM) is briefly characterized indicating the destruction factors, possible consequences of changing the LFCM properties, and main factors of the risks. The FCM properties, which are most essential for the current state evaluation of the "Shelter" object safety and for prognostic purposes, are presented. The main requirements for a programme of the FCM behaviour monitoring are noted.
