This satellite Workshop to the 4th Conference on “Statistical Physics: Modern Trends and Applications” is the Kick-Off Meeting of a recently established “Research group Partnership” between the Computational Physics Group headed by Prof. Wolfhard Janke (Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Leipzig, Germany), and the group of former A. von Humboldt Fellow Dr. Viktoria Blavatska (Institute for Condensed Matter Physics, National Academy of Sciences, Lviv, Ukraine). This joint project entitled “Conformational Transitions of Complex Polymers in Porous Environments and on Disordered Substrates” will be funded in the period 2012-2015 by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Scientifically the project deals with problems ranging from polymer transport properties in porous rock formations to investigations of the behavior of macromolecules in complex biological cells where other molecules form randomly distributed obstacles (so-called “crowded cell” problem). Methodologically such and similar problems will be tackled by a combination of analytical and computational approaches for which complementary expertise exists in the two groups in Lviv and Leipzig. The goal of the Workshop is to review preparatory research work of the two groups and to get inspiring input from international experts in the field.
