The processes of gas--induced and vacancy-induced swelling of lava--like fuel--containing masses (LFCM) are analized. One obtained the basic transport equations for the description of mentioned phenomena. One proposed the model of thermal spikes which is found to describe qualitively the possibility of local melting of LFCM during breaking of $\alpha $--particles and nuclei movement.
