STYLISED MODELS OF SUSTAINABLE HUMAN ECOLOGIESMatteo Marsili (Personal webpage)Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics
Laboratory for Quantitative Sustainability, Trieste, Italy Complexity Science Hub, Vienna, Austria) I will describe stylised theoretical models of human ecologies, grounded on empirical evidences from different disciplines, whose un-expected collective behaviour is compatible with a sustainable future on Planet Earth. The motivation for this (admittedly unconventional) research focus is that, although these models may describe worlds that may not (yet or any longer) exist, the world (intended in its epistemological sense) that we currently live in may not last for much longer. This calls for reconsidering the conceptual foundations on which the existing economic system is based and for exploring, with statistical mechanics methods, the collective behaviours of worlds based on different premises. I’d articulate it in two lectures, one based on this paper https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.10537 and the second on this https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.01085. |
